Jiyoo Chang Named to WDNT Team!

Junior defender Jiyoo Chang has been named to the Los Angeles and Orange County Area Team for the Women's Division National Tournament, the most prestigious invitational tournament for high school lacrosse in the nation. She is one of only sixteen players from the two counties to be named to the team, which will play teams from around the country at Stony Brook University in New York at the end of May. She is the first Woodbridge player to ever make the team, a tribute to her talent, dedication, and outstanding work ethic.

Girls Lacrosse Undefeated at Rose Bowl

The Girls Lacrosse team began its 2012 season with a strong showing at the Rose Bowl Tournament, finishing the day with a win and two ties on their record. This season's tournament was marked by remarkable parity, as both teams which Woodbridge tied - Esperanza and Palos Verdes - each also finished without taking a loss, leading to the unusual circumstance of three undefeated teams in one eight team bracket.

Each tie was the result of stong second half comebacks, sparked by the transition play of midfielders Joyce Yang, Jess Lesser, and Stephanie Renteria, and clutch scoring by Anna Takushi and Sage Klemek. Defenders Caity Duke, Jiyoo Chang, and Sharon Jeon held a dangerous Northwood squad in check during the third game, leading to a well-earned 10-6 victory over our city rival.

Veronika Tsymbler named PCL Goalie; 2nd team All-County

5/20/2011 Girls Lacrosse (UPDATED: 5/23/2011)

Congratulations to senior goaltender Veronika Tsymbler on being named Pacific Coast League Goalie of the Year, one of the league's top two honors for Girls Lacrosse.  Veronika broke the school record for goals allowed per game by two full goals and posted a 51% save percentage, one of the top marks in the county.  It is the most prestigious honor ever earned by a Woodbridge lacrosse player. 

  

*** UPDATE***  Veronika was also named as the second team All-County Goalie.  

  

Remarkably, this was only Veronika's second season in goal, having begun her lacrosse career as an attacker.  This honor is a testament to her hard work, selflessness, and total commitment.

  

At the Girls Lacrosse banquet on Thursday, seven other girls were announced as having earned All-League status.  They were:

• First Team - junior defender Caity Duke and sophomore midfielder Anna Takushi;
    
• Second Team - junior defender Stephanie Renteria and junior attacker Patricia Tam;
    
• Honorable Mention - senior midfielder Aura Meza, sophomore midfielder Sage Klemek, and sophomore defender Ji Yoo Chang.

Girls Lacrosse Earns Playoff Bid

The Warrior Girls Lacrosse team will compete against Aliso Niguel High School in the first round of the US Lacrosse Southern Section Division 2 Playoff Tournament.  The game will be Wednesday, May 4th at 7:00pm at Aliso Niguel.

  

This is the first time a Woodbridge Lacrosse team has qualified for the playoffs in the brief four year history of the program and they become the first girls team from Irvine to do so.  The game is a rematch of the championship game of this year's Rose Bowl Tournament.  We hope to see you at Aliso Niguel on Wednesday as the Warrior girls make history and try to avenge that loss. 

  

Special congratulations to seniors Aura Meza, Veronika Tsymbler, and Subrina Cariaga, who were there for the first practice in program history four years ago and will now leave having brought this team to the playoffs.  Their leadership has been remarkable.

Girls Lacrosse Defeats Irvine in Overtime Thriller

4/29/2011 Girls Lacrosse

Woodbridge 15, Irvine 12 (OT):  After four lead changes and a furious last second comeback, the Girls Lacrosse team pulled away from Irvine in overtime to win 15 to 12 Thursday night at Irvine Stadium.  The victory completed a second straight undefeated season against city opponents for the Lady Laxers!

  

This victory was extremely hard fought.  After the teams traded control of possession and scoring runs throughout the game, the Warriors found themselves down by three with five minutes to play.  Tenacious defense forced a turnover and shifted momentum, with the Warriors finally pulling even on a brilliant score by sophomore Anna Takushi(one for the game and a season high eleven for her), set up by strong work on the draw circle by sophomore Sage Klemek and junior Stephanie Renteria, with thirty seconds remaining.

  

Overtime possession and scoring was dominated by the Warriors, while senior goalieVeronika Tsymbler and the defensive work of junior Caity Duke, sophomore Ji Yoo Chang, and junior Amy Yuan among others, kept the Vaqueros at bay.  Veronika ended the game with a remarkable fifteen saves and the regular season with a 51% save percentage, an outstanding figure for upper level lacrosse.  An off balance laser beam of a shot to the far corner of the net by senior Subrina Cariaga sealed the victory and junior Amanda Jaramillo worked hard to keep the ball out of Irvine possession as the clocked ticked to zero.

The fate of the Warrior Lacrosse team is now in the hands of the US Lacrosse Playoff Tournament Seeding Committee.  With their regular season complete, the team hopes its resume as the top team in Irvine will earn it its first ever playoff berth.  Playoff seedings will be made available on Saturday with the playoffs to begin next week.

  

The team would like to thank its friends and family for the tremendous crowd support at the game.  Your energy and passion kept the team going through a grueling, physical game.  You were amazing!

Girls Lacrosse Defeats Northwood

4/25/2011 Girls Lacrosse

Woodbridge 14, Northwood 8:  The Warrior Girls Lacrosse team came back from Spring Break strong and ready, posting a critical 14-8 victory over Northwood Monday afternoon at South Lake Middle School.  

  

Sophomore midfielder Anna Takushi scored a game high seven goals while sophomoreSage Klemek and senior Patricia Tam dominated midfield possession.  

  

The defense posted one of its strongest efforts yet, spearheaded by stalwart senior goalie Veronika Tsymbler and juniors Amy Yuan and Caity Duke. 

  

The team will finish the regular season this Thursday night at Irvine Stadium with a pivotal game against league and city rival Irvine High.  Game time is 6pm.
