WHS Girls Lax Tryouts 2016-17

Woodbridge Girls Lacrosse will be holding tryouts for the 2015-16 season on TUESDAY AUGUST 16TH - 10AM-NOON FOR NEW PLAYERS AND NOON TO 2PM FOR ALL RETURNING PLAYERS; AT THE WHS ATHLETIC FIELDS.

All athletes interested in playing lacrosse next year, whether Varsity or JV last year, or brand new to the program are expected to participate in tryouts. Athletes participating in Fall sports (cross country, volleyball, etc) should attend the tryout if their practice schedule will allow it. If not, please contact me.

No previous playing experience is required to participate in tryouts.

For returning players: The August tryout will be the last piece of the puzzle in determining team placement for 2017. Please bring both running shoes and cleats to the tryout, along with your stick, goggles, and mouthpiece.  Returning athletes will be timed in the 40 yard dash, T cone agility drill, and 50 yard repeat fitness test, and then participate in some skill drills. Remember that successful completion of all 20 reps of the fitness test is required to be considered for Varsity status; any returning Varsity players who fail to pass the test may be dropped to JV or granted Probationary Varsity status and given until November to pass the test or be dropped a level. Players on last year's JV team who fail to pass the fitness test will likely not be considered for Varsity. After the tryout, the results of the tryout will be considered alongside all aspects of a player's performance in the program, and the initial Varsity and JV rosters for 2016-17 will be posted.

For new players: On the tryout date, all new players will be run through the same speed and agility tests as the returning players, run a timed mile for their fitness test, and then will have a chance to demonstrate their lacrosse skills in a series of drills. Remember that attitude, athleticism, learning ability, and potential matter as much if not more than current skill level; we are looking for girls we can project as being Varsity contributors at some point in their high school career.  New players currently participating in our summer camp will be allowed to keep their checked out sticks and goggles after summer camp to continue practicing and should bring them along with a mouthpiece to tryouts. If you have cleats, please bring them along with running shoes, although you may participate in tryouts with just running shoes. New players not participating in camp and without their own equipment are welcome to participate in the tryouts and will be checked out equipment for use at the tryout. If you have friends who are interested in joining the team, please encourage them to attend the tryout and give it a try. All checked out equipment will be re-collected at the end of the tryout.

If you have any questions about the process or cannot attend the tryout date for any reason, please contact WHS Girls Lacrosse Head Coach Grant Davis at grantdavis@iusd.org

Two Warriors Named All-County for Girls Lacrosse

Woodbridge Juniors Jenny Buckland (pictured) and Karina Yamasaki were both named Second Team All-County by US Lacrosse for the 2014 Season.

Attacker Karina Yamasaki set a county record for goals scored in a season with 105 goals and led Southern California in ground balls won with 126. She also posted 14 assists and won 63% of her draws to establish herself as one of the premiere draw specialists in the county.

Midfielder Jenny Buckland functioned as the point guard of the Warrior attack, setting a school recored with 27 assists, to go along with 59 goals and 17 forced turnovers. Her pressure defense and full field play led her to a spot on the Orange County/LA WDNT All-Star Team which played in a national tournament in Maryland earlier this month.

It was a truly remarkable season for both of these athletes with even more to come their senior years!

Woodbridge Girls Lacrosse Wins Tournament Championship

Warrior Lady Lax returned from the Rose Bowl in Pasadena champions of the Blue Division bracket, defeating three of the top teams in Southern California in the process.

The Warriors began the morning with a decisive 11-2 victory against a Glendale squad which made the CIF Southern Section North Division quarterfinals last season. Senior captain Anna Takushi led all scorers with four goals while sophomore Jenny Buckland was a force on defense and in transition and assisted on three goals.

Mid-day saw the Warriors take on the Yorba Linda Mustangs, a match-up which has become a fierce rivalry over the course of several meetings the past three season between the closely matched foes. A back and forth contest ended in a 7-5 Warrior victory, sparked by senior captain Joyce Yang's two goals and determined work in transition as well as clutch play between the pipes by junior goalie Averly Tan.

The afternoon championship contest pitted the Warriors against the preseason #7 team in Orange County, the Trabuco Hills Mustangs. The Warriors built a first half lead around the defensive duo of senior Jiyoo Chang and sophomore Danielle Gonzalez but then saw Trabuco rally at the end of the second half to tie the game at 7 all and send it into overtime. In overtime sophomore attacker Karina Yamasaki, senior attacker Ellie Young, and Anna Takushi made clutch plays which culminated in two unanswered goals and a 9-7 victory.

The victory marks Woodbridge's first tournament title in program history and first victory against a top 10 county opponent - a testament to the hard work and competitive spirit of this remarkable group of girls. Check our schedule elsewhere on the website and make sure to catch this team in action this season!

Warrior Lady Lax Alumni Update

The photo above comes from the Santa Barbara Shootout, a collegiate women's lacrosse tournament held at UC Santa Barbara the weekend of 2/15/2013, which featured this moment reuniting Northern Arizona University starting goalie Veronika Tsymbler '11 (far left) and starting defense wing Elise Tang '09 (far right) with UC Irvine starting defense wing Amy Yuan '12 (middle left) and starting low defense Savannah Todd '12. All four former Warriors represented their colleges and the Warrior spirit proudly in tournament play.

Elsewhere, Kara Hericks '11 has resumed her scoring ways as a starting attacker for the Army Black Knights, netting two goals in her debut game, a West Point victory over Air Force.

The program is proud to have so many Warriors continuing to play and excel at the collegiate level. Good luck on the heart of lacrosse season to come!

Anna Takushi Named All-County

Junior attack wing Anna Takushi was selected 2nd Team All-County following a stellar campaign highlighted by a school record 86 goals scored on a remarkably efficient 62% shooting. That goal total made Anna the leading scorer in all of Orange County and top 10 in the State of California. Anna was equally dangerous as a defender and on the draw circle, also leading the team in ground ball controls. This is a remarkable achievement for Anna with even more to come next season!

This is the second year in a row Woodbridge has placed a player on the All-County team; Veronika Tsymbler was an All-County goalie last season.

Girls Lacrosse Undefeated at Rose Bowl

The Girls Lacrosse team began its 2012 season with a strong showing at the Rose Bowl Tournament, finishing the day with a win and two ties on their record. This season's tournament was marked by remarkable parity, as both teams which Woodbridge tied - Esperanza and Palos Verdes - each also finished without taking a loss, leading to the unusual circumstance of three undefeated teams in one eight team bracket.

Each tie was the result of stong second half comebacks, sparked by the transition play of midfielders Joyce Yang, Jess Lesser, and Stephanie Renteria, and clutch scoring by Anna Takushi and Sage Klemek. Defenders Caity Duke, Jiyoo Chang, and Sharon Jeon held a dangerous Northwood squad in check during the third game, leading to a well-earned 10-6 victory over our city rival.

This weeks schedule features two home games - Tuesday against Dana Hills and Wednesday against Yorba Linda. Come out to show your support and check out our team Maxpreps page for statistics and Player of the Week articles throughout the season.

Go Warriors!!!
